How to Deal with Sadness
Chapter 4 verses 2-3:
Therefore, my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.
We’ve been learning that relationships is a HUGE deal. It’s not just those around us, but the One that lives in us. The main issue is Jesus is Lord and Savior, we are to become more like Him and be disciples of His – showing God’s goodness, love, grace and truth.
The friendships we have, the ability to pray with and pray for others, those that bring us meals or send us cards….not just because that’s how you “do” church. No, but because we love each other – and rightly so.
How to Handle Offenses
But offenses will come no matter how kind and thoughtful we are. This leaves us bitter, sometimes despising the very ones we are called to love. Maybe you have a grudge towards your kids or your husband. But if they are saved they are also created in the image of God. They are the very ones God has placed in your life to make you more like Christ. Yet they are imperfect, just as you are. They will not and cannot avoid offending you at some point. I like to think about how God has forgiven me of my continual sin against Him.
What About Bitterness?
Chapter 4 verse 4
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
This is stated as a command. It is also in our best interest to rejoice in God who is constant when other things in our life aren’t.
There may be the passing of a loved one or simply a friend moves away, health fails, coworkers move against you, whatever may be. But in the end God is the same, He is on your side, He is consistent in His love, power, and truth. We can find contentment and, therefore, rejoice in Him.
So we don’t get pushed down by the world and sin and circumstances, it is for our own good to rejoice and find our delight in God.
