How to Stay Motivated to Blog
Today I’m talking to mom bloggers who ask how to stay motivated to blog when each win is hard-earned and provide little results.
We see the income reports, YouTube videos and Instagram ads that promise instant results, 1000 followers in one day, 10k views in a month.
Even if you don’t feed into the hype, blogging seems simple. Start a blog, put up some ads and in short order you’ll make some money. However, soon you realize blogging for money isn’t just about putting your words on the web.
Images, plugins, social media, SEO, video, affiliates, templates, opt-ins and did you forget to create content for your email list!
It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and distracted with the wrong things.
Just came to join the Facebook Group?
Do you even have time for this? I mean, we are mom’s after all and that is a full-time job! I find myself looking at my screen more than I’d like. But I’m not using the Internet for leisure, I’m working and working hard.
Blogging is not for the weak of heart. Finding confidence in what we are doing and that it DOES and CAN become full-time income will keep us on track. Listen…
Those who don’t know what you are doing (or why) will question, criticize or even belittle you. You cannot let that stop you. Today YouTube stars are many times more popular than television actors. Bloggers are getting spots on talkshows and interviews in magazines. Think of all those before you, nobodies that became somebodies.
Being online you have access to a growing audience and many, many are moms who are seeking what you are offering. Know that it is possible. The difference between those who succeed and those that don’t: Diligence and Resources. This post is mostly about diligence, that ‘keep going’ mindset. Below you will find a couple of resources that will also motivate you. But first, let’s talk about 5 tips so you will know how to stay motivated to blog.
Here’s How to Stay Motivated to Blog

Stay Motivated to Blog Tip #1
Keep things in perspective. Like we said, everyone is telling you that you can do it in little time. That’s a sales scheme.
I’m not saying it’s impossible to scale a blog business in a few weeks or a month but you have to think, what resources does that person have available to them. You may not have the same availability of time, resources or help.
Don’t compare yourself to others.
Everyday you have a chance to grow your audience, even if you can’t work on your blog that day, what you did the days before make a difference. So anything you do today, at naptime or nightime DOES matter. You are making a bunch of tiny steps in order to get down the road of your goals.
This is exactly what I talk about in my blog post, Preparation Comes in Bits.
Encourage yourself by knowing we all want to make BIG steps but every blogger that is making thousands took lots of tiny steps and just like you. And I’m sure they had days where it seemed there efforts went nowhere.
Stay Motivated to Blog Tip #2
You can’t blog for the end results. You have to get a thrill from the process. Of course you have goals but its in the process that will keep you doing this again and again. It’s just like any other job. If you are waiting for that end-of-the-year raise but dislike each project or dislike dealing with your daily customers, you really need a new job. The pay off needs to be every time you are working. Keep in mind there are other work from home opportunities that’ll give you pay-offs faster.
Stay Motivated to Blog Tip #3
Think about your why. Most of us aren’t doing this to be rich but instead to increase our income, be home with our children, provide a better life for ourselves or a loved one. Maybe you are doing this as a creative outlet or you are laying the foundation for a bigger business idea. You must see your purpose in life connected to what you are doing. If you don’t see how this enhances who you are and how you envision your future I’d dare say stop blogging and go find your purpose.
Stay Motivated to Blog Tip #4
Make connections. The connections we make either to our audience or with other bloggers will fuel us. It’s terribly hard to continue in anything when you have no support and you aren’t reaching out to help others.
Stay Motivated to Blog Tip #5
Know yourself. To me all bloggers fall into one of these categories: a writer, a teacher, a businesswoman or a feeler. If you can discover more of who you are, it’ll give you more purpose and perhaps curve how you blog, leading to fulfillment of #2 on this list.
Stay Motivated to Blog BONUS Tip #6
Create goals. long-term (5 year, 1 year, 6 mo, 3 mo, this month, weekly and even daily). If you have something specific you are shooting for you and you write it down, you are more likely to reach it. If you have goals for the month or even just for the weekend you will be better able to gauge your success and evaluate your failures and how you can level them up to successes.
I did mention that those who succeed do so because they are not only diligent but because they have resources. The more resources you have available and use appropriately the more gain you will receive.
Here are two resources to equip your blogger tool belt
The first resource is Evernote.
I’ve used for years before I started blogging but now I write up every blog post in this app. Evernote also holds all of my contacts, ideas on round-ups, facebook info, really every social account. I also keep track of my expenses and receipts for tax time.
I value this app so much that I created a FREE Evernote Quick Start Guide for Moms. In it I walk you through signing up, setting up your first notes and notebook, and how to search and tag your notes. I even give a few tips for how it works for moms. Yes, Evernote isn’t just for blogging. Visit my post How to Use Evernote for Moms for the break down.
Already know about Evernote but want tricks and tips, check out Master Evernote: The Unofficial Guide to Organizing Your Life with Evernote
The second resource is my Becoming Mom Bloggers Collab Facebook group.
This is a great group of supporting mom bloggers who share, promote, and give feedback on anything blogging. We are working together to help each other’s blogs to grow. The ladies in the group is super supportive as we cheer each other on. I also give weekly teachings and Facebook lives on networking, business, and blogging. We’d love to have you!

This was such a good read I also shared this. I never thought about things in this way. I wonder if I’m a writer, teacher, business woman or feeler??
Thank you for this post! Very encouraging.
Thank you for sharing this Rose! I love my little motherhood community and that is why I blog. But it is so hard not to compare ourselves to others and their success. Every Penny counts! 😉
Thank you for this post, it really helped me, especially tips 1 and 2. I am still in the beginning stages but I get so overwhelmed sometimes that I still have so much to learn.
Tips number 2 and 4 really stand out to me. If you don’t enjoy the PROCESS of blogging you are just going to be miserable and the CONNECTIONS I’ve made through blogging already have blown my mind and enriched my life deeply!
I have been blogging off and on for quite some time. I always wanted to monetize my blog but was not consistent in my efforts. I am now committed and love the ideas you provide. I find that #4 is hard for me. Despite being in this space for awhile, I have not made any real connections. That is an area I want to improve.
Diligence is important! There are days when you’ll feel like giving up, but you’ve got to be determined enough that the low days don’t get you down. Keep on keeping on!
Great tips, Rose! I think my biggest motivator has been my financial goals. I’m grateful to be a SAHM and that my husband’s job pays well, but I want to travel the world with my large family of ten! That was never going to happen on the scale I wanted unless I earned the money myself. Those goals helped me persevere through the most difficult first few months, and now I’m seeing pretty great rewards!
It has been 5 months that I m blogging and I have achieved some of my goals in pinterest for instance but there is still so much to do such as getting subscribers that I m losing my motivation especially as we have still so much to do at home and as a mom. So THANK YOU for this post and the awesome tips as getting some motivation again after reading you 🙂
Thank you so much for this. I think I get my patience from my YouTube channel, blogging is a process and once we know our we have to stick it through.
This is a great list of reminders. It is so easy to get discouraged with blogging but these tips really put everything in perspective. Your posts are always so encouraging!
I struggle with motivation from time to time. These are great tips! Thanks!
Thanks for this advice! I am just starting out in my blogging journey and already feel pressure to make progress. But then I remembered why I started a blog in the first place; I want to connect with other homeschooling moms and build a supportive community of positivity. Even if I never really make any money from it or it never gets big. I love having a social and creative outlet now as a SAHM! Slow progress is totally fine!
These are really awesome tips. I have got to start setting concrete goals! I have been afraid to because I’m afraid of getting caught in the numbers game. Any suggestions for other types of goals?
Thank you!! I definitely need a monetary goal haha
This really is great advice! I am one year into my journey and just hit 500 followers. It’s been a long road, but I am only now starting to use social media to my advantage. My goal is to be able to stay home with my kids, like you mentioned. Thanks so much for sharing this!
This really hit home for me, Rose. I feel so much pressure to get traffic, monetize, get likes, etc. that it started making me anxious. All I really want to do right now is write about my experience and connect with other people going through the same phase in life. I feel like this post has given me “permission” to do that. Thank you so much!
Great Advice! Nice to have someone more experienced to learn from 🙂
