The Power Keys to Home Management
Keep reading for your free checklist!
I do understand not knowing how to get your house on your control. I blog about home management, but it doesn’t come easily by far.
With three kids over the years and no idea how to organize a house, it took me many years of stumbling about, having people come to help and tons of YouTube videos before I could feel confident managing my home.
I finally got into a groove! Yay! Then last year we moved. Boo!
Not only did we have the chaos of moving with kids but the house was also smaller! Yikes!
So now decluttering and Facebook’s marketplace were my best friends.
Everything was chaotic!
My kids needed an occupation while I got my feet under me. We needed food because we went to the bare necessities during the transition. I had made ahead some meals! Great right? But somehow, in the heat of late summer, with our low-energy stores because of the moving process, the meals I made wasn’t enough. The kids were completely fine on energy, by the way.
Can you imagine? With boxes and children and moving things about (because the original layout plan didn’t work), everything was a big mess in my head.
I felt as cluttered and chaotic as the house was.
So what do you do to get back and control at home?
Maybe your situation isn’t a move. Loads of issues can lead to a chaotic house.
A divorce or deep marital issue
Debt and working on ways to solve it
Health issues
Mama’s priorities getting out of line
A new baby
Kids laziness
Having lots of activities outside of the home
Mama not knowing how to manage
If you feel like nothing’s working, there’s not enough food, clothes are always dirty, then this is for you.

#1 Feed everyone
I mean go get Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s or get a frozen pizza. If they are hungry you won’t focus or have the energy for anything. The kids will drive you nuts if they are hungry every 30 minutes. So once you’ve eaten, write down five quick meals that you or the kids can make on their own.
Run to the store and get the ingredients while you have fuel.
Quick ideas:
Peanut butter and jelly
Ham and cheese
Chicken nuggets and tater tots
Macaroni and cheese
Ground beef
Canned soup with crackers
And whatever else. Keep something in their stomachs for a day (or 3) while you do the other keys.
#2 Find time-sensitive items and DC as many as possible.
DC means Discontinue. This means return library items, pay bills that are soon due or overdue (because you got so busy!).
This also means cancel every unnecessary (I mean urgent but not important) appointments. Say no to your friends, your volunteer position, your dentist, your kids play date.
Don’t push yourself, you can’t do everything! Getting peace in your home is more important than that one-hour meetup.
#3 Clean Clothes
Let’s get clean clothes available for everyone. Just like with the time-sensitive appointment, some things you’re going to have to say no to. This time, your going to have to say no to your own desires in this. This is what getting in control requires.
No, I can’t continue unpacking when there are no clean towels.
No, I can’t watch tv while there is a load of unfolded clothes sitting there (do it while you watch!).
No, I can’t let my kids do whatever when I need them to help me get a few loads done. I need to direct them in helping. (if they know how to fold or put clothes in the washing machine.)
Don’t know how to get your kids to help?

And don’t go throw a load in and get preoccupied then move it to the dryer at 8 p.m. That might work if your house wasn’t in crisis mode. You’ll forget.
Instead:
Start the load, put on a timer.
When it goes off, have the kids change over the load to the dryer a new load to wash.
Put on the timer again. Now the dryer is done, go get it.
Have the kids help you fold and put it away.
Repeat.
It might be two three or four loads but you should be decently caught up in a day or two.
#3 Clean the Kitchen – so you can get in there!
This can be done in between folding. The kitchen is already such a huge part of home management, you probably already know what to do here. The important part is keeping your kitchen cleaning as the sole focus besides the laundry.
These are some of the BIG ways I discuss and my how I stay amazingly organized post.
If your kitchen is clean and you’ve kept inventory it’s easy to do the next step.
#5 Create a Meal Plan
Yep, you knew it was coming.
Since the kids are always hungry we always talk about the game plan for food.
By now your quick run for simple meals is dangerously low. Never wait until you are out. So the kitchen’s clean and ready, you have some idea of what’s left.
Jot down what to make for the following week and don’t forget snacks and lunches. Then take your plan to the store.
Free from Crisis Mode
You should be able to breathe now.
Food in the fridge and in their tummies, everyone has something to wear and you don’t have anyone immediately waiting on you to do yet another thing (thanks to #2).
I miss anything? What do you do to calm a chaotic household and get back under control?
