How to be Happier at Home

Being a stay at home mom can be problematic.  There are many benefits to being at home, but sometimes home isn’t a happy place.  This article will provide you with details on how to be happier at home.

Being at home (as opposed to the workplace) all day allows you the freedom of your schedule and more time with our loved ones, but it also means something very specific.  Something very mind-boggling for most.  Especially if you grew up with the mindset that mothers work outside the home.  What specifically does being at home mean?

It means we work and live in the same place we wake up in.

That may seem silly to point out.  Sleeping, waking, working, living all at home is matter-of-fact when anyone thinks about a stay at home mom (or dad).  But if you aren’t satisfied with how your days are going and if you are seeking happier at home, you may simply be stumbling over this simple fact.  Let’s think deeper about what’s going on.

Modern Society and the Mom at Home

Now there are a ton of misconceptions about moms who don’t go out of the house to work.  There are some serious misunderstandings about what kind of women stay home, our intentions, desires, abilities, and our time availability.

I break down these misconceptions, and layout the truths in my newest book that I’m giving away (see the bottom of this post) –

So You Wanna Be a Stay at Home Mom?

This short guide was written to, not just clear the air about who a stay at home mom is, but also to give some practical advice about how to become one and how to run your day once you are at home.

You can pick up this book right now on Amazon or wait until the end of this post to find out how you can win a free copy!

Now how can you actually be happier at home?  There are a few things you can do.  But first, you must identify why you aren’t happy at home.  Here are 3 things to consider:

  1. When you look at your daily life, do you feel dull and apathetic towards it?  Do you feel like nothing really matters and no matter the activity presented you feel no exuberance? If this is the case you may be suffering from depression.  Depression is beyond the span of this post, but I highly recommend you look into what depression is, especially post-partum depression (which can come months after having a baby).
  2. Do you feel stifled by constant mothering and homemaking?  Like you don’t have a life outside of the home?
  3. Does your home seem dull, boring or lonely?

There are lots to consider but I’ve found these are the top things moms are feeling when they are seeking to be happier at home.  So what are some solutions?

Well, if you are in the #1 camp, seek medical and spiritual counseling.  I have been there and I know it can be hard to reach out because you either don’t think you need help or feel that even that is useless.  God is there for you.  Speak to your husband frankly and soon.

Camp #2 moms really need a break.  It’s not necessarily that you can’t be a SAHM or that you don’t like your home, you need to find yourself again.  I recommend you read my posts to Beat Burn-out and Keeping Your Spark Burning Hot.  These are guaranteed to give life to your mommying.

And camp #3 speaks to the mom who just feels like your home is a trap.  Loneliness is a real thing and so is boredom at home.    The answer to this depends on you.  Do you need to invite people over more often?  Make your way out of the house more frequently?  Even a daily walk (yes, with the kids) can do a lot of good for you and them.  Music, diffused essential oils, pillows and new decor can give a needed change to a stale look.

You may also need to get a daily routine to expand your options.  Don’t frown at routines, they surprisingly give energy and essence to your life.  I have a whole series of what to do each day of the week for the stay at home mom.  Check it out!

I stay at home and do all the SAH parental duties while working-from-home too. It’s hard but the chance to travel with my kid has been super rewarding. So, for anyone want to try the mom lifestyle, go ahead! It’s going to be fun. Worth the memories. 😀
