How to Make a Prayer Journal for Moms
A few years ago I was searching Youtube for videos on How to Make a Prayer Journal and I came across some very encouraging things, however, I only recently started a prayer journal.
I wish I had done it a long time ago, especially during the newborn stages of motherhood. Distraction ruled and if I wasn’t distracted I was falling asleep during my personal prayer time.
Time with the Lord is so important for moms and precious, which is why the devil hates that. He wants to keep us from growing in the Lord, and from getting to know Him enough that our faith is like a mustard seed.
If you are that mom falling asleep trying to pray, prayer journaling is for you.

What is a Prayer Journal?
Really it is any type of bound paper where you can write down your prayers. You don’t have to buy anything fancy, unless you want to. Here is my prayer journal:
As you can see in the video, mine is pretty straight-forward. If you are looking for glamorous ones you can find loads of prayer journal examples on Instagram!
You can also find prayer journal ideas on Pinterest.
So as you can see prayer journals come in many shapes and sizes. They can be minimalistic, homemade, prompted or pretty. I know most moms at home cannot afford to buy those elaborate journals, so if you are interested in a homemade one you can certainly find how to make a prayer journal using simple supplies and a composition notebook from the Dollar Tree.
How do Prayer Journals Work?
Once you’ve gotten your prayer journal you need to start using it. Don’t put it off, putting it on a shelf isn’t going to be helpful for you (unless you get it off of the shelf daily and use it!). Prayer journaling can be as simple as writing in your prayers. It also can be as complex as creating a bullet journal kind of style with spreads for what to do each day of the week. But let’s keep it simple. Pick one or a few of these to add to your journal, daily:
- Prayers
- Praises (like a gratitude journal)
- Thoughts on God’s Word
- Copy Scriptures on prayer
- A List of Prayer Requests
- A List of Answered Prayers
What do I talk to God about?
Okay, if you are thinking about how to make a prayer journal, I would assume you already know how to pray. This is the same thing but on paper. Maybe you are confused on what to write in your prayer journal? Okay, I can understand this (somewhat) because not everyone is in love with writing. There are lots of prompts for journaling prayers, but again let’s keep this basic. Your prayers should include everything you think about, need answers to or want to celebrate!
I do like the ACTS format, although I don’t tend to pray this way. It is helpful to make sure your prayers are just full of requests:
A – Adoration of our Lord, praising Him
C – Confession of sin
T – Thanksgiving, naming the blessings God has given
S – Supplication, the requests for yourself and others
And don’t hold back. This is your journal. Don’t edit it either. Remember, God sees all 🙂
Tips for How to Make a Prayer Journal
There are a few things I recommend concerning making a prayer journal.
- Prayer journaling is a part of your quiet time or devotional to God. Prayer journaling should be added onto time reading God’s Word and worshipping Him. I highly recommend still praying to God, outside of whatever you write down.
- Go back periodically. I try to go back every few days and read over my prayers and write any answers that have come. This can be highly encouraging.
- Keep your prayer journal private. It is a journal after all. If you are writing down all of your fears and heartaches, sometimes those involve the very people around us and we don’t want to hurt anyone while asking for help.
- Remember this post is about how to make a prayer journal, so I am going to tell you to avoid using a prayer journal app. Now, is it better than nothing, yes. However, to get the full benefit of doing this, I really feel like you need to write. Writing slows down our racing thoughts and helps us to focus. Writing things down means we are more likely to do it or remember it. Writing makes it more personal. This links you in communication with your Creator.
We generally communicate with our spouses in various ways, so why not with our first Love?
